My Time & More Preschool reading program:
I feel that phonetic awareness and reading are essential pre-k skills. It is important to me to build your child’s awareness of letters and their sounds. This reading readiness is often an individual process. Not all children are ready at the same time. Therefore in my preschool, my reading program has an individual component. Children will move at their own pace to meet their own needs. All children will be exposed to phonics and reading skills.
Together we can give them the skills they need along with confidence and motivation to be readers.
Reading every day is important. Just 5-15 minutes of practicing letter ring sounds, reading a “BOB” book together, reading another book of choice, reading a “SAM” book or playing a language game will help develop the habit of reading. Keeping it short and fun is important too at this age.
Preschoolers (3 & 4 year olds) will use the BOB books pre-reader series (books 1-24) as take home books. Preschoolers will also take home their letter rings to practice phonics of individual letters.
Pre – Kinders (4 & 5 year olds who will enter kindergarten in July/August of 2012) will also take home the BOB books as pre-readers. Once they have completed the BOB books and the lowercase alphabet letter rings and in class “star” chart, they will be adding site words to their letter ring as well as starting the “SAM” books independent reader series. SAM books will also go from school to home back to school. SAM books will be introduced on an individual basis when your child is ready. This series also has 24 books.
* note: if a preschooler is ready, he/she will be given the opportunity to start the site words and SAM books.
